ABOUT ME
Hello, I'm Shayla Cabalan.
I am a multimedia journalist, editor, and audio producer. Currently, I am a multimedia content producer and morning anchor for 93.1 WIBC-FM.

I graduated from the University of Indianapolis in 2020, with bachelor's degrees in Communication - Electronic Media and English - Creative Writing.

I have a strong passion for writing, audio production/sound design, and in general, using my creativity to positively impact the world in some way. My dream would be to work in an environment where I can creatively produce audio content that tells compelling stories.
Overall, my peers have described me as a well-rounded, tenacious and passionate individual who will make a learning experience of whatever career path I choose.
I joined The Reflector and The Reflector Online in the spring of 2017 and was involved for a year and a half after that before returning in the spring of 2020.
I served as the Reflector's opinion editor during my junior year. I currently serve as an editorial assistant for The Reflector.

Throughout my time at The Reflector, I have conducted many interviews and written articles on numerous subjects. As Opinion Editor, I also gained experience in page design and staff management.

My time on the paper has been invaluable, and has fueled both my love of writing and journalism.

Radio
I joined the staff at 88.7 WICR-FM in the fall of 2017. I served as The Diamond's Director of News and Public Affairs from 2019-2020, ensuring all newscasts ran smoothly, as well as overseeing the development of original stories.

I also served as an on-air personality for WICR. Along with hosting weekly two-hour shows, I also produced newscasts regularly.
In addition, I have experience voicetracking, co-hosting multiple two hour long morning shows, and producing remote broadcasts.

Most recently, my newscast was deemed best in the state by the Society of Professional Journalists.

Currently, I work as a multimedia content producer and Saturday morning news anchor for 93.1 WIBC-FM.
Public Speaking
I have been involved in competitive Speech and Debate since the sixth grade. Since then, I have placed state-wide and nation-wide at both the high school and collegiate level.

For two years in a row, I qualified to compete at the Interstate Oratorical Association, which hosts the oldest speech tournament in the country. IOA publishes each of its competitors' speeches.

My most recent accomplishment in the Speech and Debate world is getting one of my speeches published in the 14th edition of Understanding Human Communication, published by Oxford University Press.

I was previously UIndy's Speech and Debate Secretary as well as its social media manager.
